Actor de cine francés. Debutó en el cine en 1965 e interpretó papeles menores hasta que su desempeño en Los rompepelotas (1974) le valió un rol protagónico en 1900 (1976) de Bernardo Bertolucci. En la década de 1980 actuó en EE.UU. y Europa, y se convirtió en la principal estrella masculina del cine francés. Célebre por su imagen fílmica que combinaba sensibilidad y fuerza masculina, brindó convincentes actuaciones en El último metro (1980), El regreso de Martin Guerre (1981), El manantial de las colinas (1986), La venganza de Manon (1986), Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) y Todas las mañanas del mundo (1992).
